A £1,000 cheque has been donated to St Helens homeless charity Teardrops by two local businesses.

Luxor Group and Lloyds Bank team up to tackle homelessness

Paul Nicholson from Luxor Group, the Merseyside property developer behind the regeneration of the Tyrers building and Phil Burton, manager at Lloyds Bank on Hardshaw Street delivered the £1,000 cheque to Teardrops founder, Shauni Ward yesterday (Tuesday 7 February).

Also in attendance was Gary Maddock, St Helens town centre manager; Kristina Metcalf, head of business development at Luxor Group and Teardrops charity ambassador Kirsty Hornby.

Teardrops is a non-profitable organisation set up to support the homeless in St Helens, Halton and other surrounding areas in the North West of England.

Their aim is to support the homeless and provide opportunities for individuals to reach their full potential. With no overall provision for homeless people in St Helens – only limited piecemeal services – Teardrops’ ambition is to provide a self-contained shelter with no waiting list that will give homeless people the chance to get off the streets and integrate into day to day society.

To date the charity has supported over 90 people, identified during outreach activities, provided 40 rucksacks containing essential provisions to the homeless and handed out further supplies such as toothbrushes and hats to those who need them.

Luxor and Lloyd’s donation will be used to fund the charity’s continuous outreach efforts, which includes delivering warm food, drinks and supplies twice a week in the town centre and running a night cafe at Centurion House on North Road.

Teardrops’ long term goal is to set up a night shelter in St Helens, which they hope to have up and running later this year.

Denise Kelly, Teardrops CEO, says: “I would like to thank Paul and everyone at Luxor and Lloyds Bank for their kind donation to Teardrops. I have spoken with Paul on several occasions, he is fully supportive of the work we do and is passionate about giving people a chance and the opportunity to be able to live in an affordable place. Thank you to Luxor and Lloyds for their much needed support.”

Paul Nicholson, managing director of Luxor Group, says: “Homelessness is a rising issue in St Helens which as a community we should all be addressing. That’s why we are proud to be working with Teardrops, whose mission is to support homeless people and get them off the streets towards a better life.

“From working on the Tyrers development and looking at other potential sites in the town centre, I have spent a lot of time in St Helens, so we were more than happy to help this local charity. As a local investor we are keen to work alongside different community groups to find a sustainable, long term solution for the homeless.

“I would encourage others to support Teardrops as the work they do in is St Helens in making a real difference.”

Phil Burton, manager of Lloyds bank on Hardshaw Street, adds: “We are delighted to support Teardrops as they are a great local charity which carries out such invaluable work in the St Helens community.”
